Every time we've been due to cast a new James Bond for the past twenty years, the same question has arisen in the press:- Will we get a female 007 this time? The issue splits fans, with traditionalists insisting the part can only be played by a man, and those who feel it's time for a change, believing that it would be a great way to breathe new life into the nearly seventy-year-old movie franchise. Now the idea of a woman stepping into the role has a prominent supporter - and it's someone who ought to know a thing or two about what it takes to play the world's most famous secret agent on the silver screen.

Former 007 Pierce Brosnan, who brought the character back to life after a long hiatus in 1995's Goldeneye,' recently gave an interview in which he felt that now is the ideal time to hand the part to a female actor. The star, who played Bond four times before surrendering his license to kill in 2002 and moving on to other blockbuster hits such as 'Mamma Mia,' said that he thinks that it's time for men to 'get out of the way' of the part, having held it for so many decades, and also feels that having a woman in the role would be perfectly in tune with the change that's swept through Hollywood on the back of the #MeToo movement. Bond is a character whose actions towards women have been questionable in the past, and the perceived issue of his misogyny would cease to exist should the character swap genders in future films.

Brosnan did sound a note of caution in the interview, though - he doesn't believe the current producers of the franchise are likely to countenance such a dramatic change in the near future. The Bond films are the property of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The Broccoli family have been connected to the Bond films since the very first release in the 1960s, and are understood to be in favor of maintaining tradition when they seek to recast the part after the imminent departure of Daniel Craig.

Craig's final Bond movie, which is called 'No Time To Die' and will be released in 2020, will be the last time the first-ever blond Bond orders a martini shaken, not stirred. He's held the role for thirteen years, having made his debut in 2006's 'Casino Royale.' 'No Time To Die' will be his fifth outing as Bond - itself something of a surprise, as his story appeared to be completely wrapped up by the end of 2015's 'Spectre.' It's already been confirmed that moviegoers will get a slight hint of what a female Bond might look like - in the time-frame of the movie Bond is long retired, and his 007 license has passed on to a female secret agent.

Brosnan's suggestions haven't been universally welcomed. Piers Morgan, who is never short of a controversial statement when the occasion calls for it, has lambasted the idea. He responded to Brosnan's comments on his British daytime television show, and attacked them as a sign of what he feels is Hollywood becoming too 'woke.' Morgan has long been an opponent of what he sees as 'politically correct' culture, and dismissed his namesake's views as 'pathetic, virtue signaling nonsense.' Morgan is of the opinion that the recent wave of female empowerment is verging on becoming oppression of men. As is usually the case with matters such as this, his opinion has met with support and ridicule in equal measure.

While the concept of Bond turning into a woman is a completely new one on some people, others have been well-prepared for it. In the world of casinos and mobile slots, there's been a mobile slots game available for some time which goes by the name of 'Agent Jane Blonde.' The game features a female secret agent with a range of cleverly-designed weapons designed to look like everyday items, and gets to drive all the latest sports cars. Such has been the popularity of the mobile slots game that a sequel was released earlier this year. Gambling - like action films - has historically always been seen as a male preserve. The recent influx of female characters into games on mobile slots websites or related casinos has happened because more women are playing them than ever before. If the role of women in society is changing, is there a coherent argument not to have a female James Bond?

If Brosnan is right, we might be waiting for some time to find out whether anybody is brave enough to make such a divisive move with such an iconic franchise. There's also another question to be asked about why making Bond female would be necessary. As critics of the idea have pointed out, nobody would have an objection to a new range of films being launched starring a female secret agent. Given the large gaps that tend to appear between Bond films, having a 'companion series of movies starring a woman might even be welcomed by fans if the idea were presented to them in the right way.

All of this is, for now, speculation and gossip. Before we even address the question of who the next James Bond will be, we have one more thrilling adventure with Daniel Craig's incarnation of the character to get through, and we're less than a year away from seeing it. As each actor's Bond films seem to be independent of each other - i.e., the life of Sean Connery's James Bond and the life of Daniel Craig's James Bond don't appear to be connected - it's not out of the question that the producers could find a whole new way to shock us by the time the credits roll on 'No Time To Die.'' There's an increasingly loud rumor circulating on the internet that Craig's Bond will die in the final moments of the film. Could such a thing be possible? And if it were, would that be an even bigger shock than the unveiling of a female James Bond?

The only thing we can do for now is to wait and see - so roll on April 2020!
