It's not unusual for celebrities to voice their support of cannabis, however those who have been bold enough have often attracted criticism for doing so. This has changed somewhat with the increasing popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) products. These are non-psychoactive, and therefore keep the conversation fully on the therapeutic benefits offered by cannabis, rather than the negative connotations of getting stoned.

CBD is not only used because it doesn't get the user "high", but because it can even be a more effective treatment for some conditions. Take anxiety for example, which can be made worse by psychoactive influenced, but is provably calmed by CBD. Those in roles of responsibility, such as childcare, are unable to take regular cannabis because of its mind-altering effects, but can enjoy safe relief with CBD. Most of the CBD products that you'll come across are made from hemp. Companies such as Select CBD use hemp because of the tiny THC levels, which fall below 0.3 percent, the maximum allowed according to the Farm Bill.

These four celebrities are well-known for being supportive of cannabis and CBD – we share with you their stories.

    Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg is one of America's most famous actresses, and has had many memorable roles on both the small and silver screens. Whoopi has also never shied away from advocating for marijuana, and has recently started developing her own cannabis products, under the Whoopi & Maya name. Whoopi has teamed up with Maya Elisabeth, another well-known cannabis supporter who started the brand Om Edibles more than 10 years ago.

Medical cannabis products typically have higher amounts of CBD than recreational products, and Whoopi also uses the herb for therapeutic reasons. Vape pens are often Goldberg's cannabis product of choice, and these are excellent for reducing pain quickly.

    Nate Diaz

The mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Nate Diaz is best known for his exploits in the octagon, as part of the ever-popular Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). To deal with the physical toll that fighting has on the body, Diaz likes to harness the power of cannabis. However, since THC is banned by the doping agency which oversees the UFC, he has to use CBD instead.

In fact, Diaz's use of CBD created a huge stir after he was defeated by Irishman Conor McGregor at UFC 202. The American was drawing on a vape pen while answering questions at the post-fight press conference, when he was queried about what he was doing. Many people thought that Diaz was smoking normal cannabis given his reputation for being a stoner, but he explained how CBD aided his recovery, and didn't have any of the intoxicating properties that THC does.

However, Diaz was still reprimanded for taking CBD, which was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prior to 2018 – they never specifically mentioned CBD, just that all cannabinoids were banned. However, with CBD now better understood as an isolated substance, WADA took the sensible move to reschedule CBD – a move that was surely hastened by the likes of Diaz advocating for CBD.

    Olivia Wilde

Performing every night on Broadway for months on end is tiring work and hard on the body, as Olivia Wilde found out. However, instead of using opioid painkillers to soothe her pain, which have a high risk of addiction and come with many nasty side effects, Olivia has been using CBD instead. Topical products to be precise, to help manage muscle tightness.

The market for topicals and CBD-infused cosmetics is expanding massively, and people can already by CBD creams, massage gels, lipsticks and more. The benefits of a Green Roads CBD cream go beyond simply reducing pain and inflammation, both of which are possible by interacting with cannabinoid receptors that are part of the endocannabinoid system. Creams can also help to make the skin look more youthful.

    Montel Williams

Montel Williams is one of America's favorite television personalities and talk show hosts, and he has recently moved into the CBD industry. The products that Williams makes are derived from industrial hemp, and citizens all over America are able to get their hands on them. Williams is a keen supporter of cannabis for personal reasons, having used it to treat his multiple sclerosis.

However, Williams would likely not have gone into selling his own CBD products if not for another company, which was caught trying to sell their own low-quality oils, with a fake "endorsement" from Williams. Hopefully now that Montel is making his own CBD products, people will only be getting the highest quality CBD, a necessity for those living in locations where comprehensive cannabis legislation has not yet been enacted.
